About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (baptized 1564-died 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers ever to grace the English language. A popular and successful author in his lifetime, his reputation had risen so high by the end of the nineteenth century that he had become known simply as “the Bard,” and the playwright George Bernard Shaw coined the word “Bardolatry” to refer to Shakespeare worship.

Shakespeare’s plays and poems are still read and performed around the world, in every major language. He contributed hundreds of new words and popular expressions to English, and his works are a standard component of English literature courses and exams from high school onward.
