About Bogdan Chorążuk

Bogdan Chorążuk (born October 30, 1934, in Kostopil) is a Polish poet, painter, graphic artist and songwriter.

Chorążuk was born in Kostopil, located in what is now Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine, to Włodzimierz and Rozalia Chorążuk (née Lewandowski). In 1954 he graduated from the Felczers State High School in Siemianowice Śląskie and started working as a felcher (field surgeon) in Olsztyn Province.

In the years 1959–62 he was the owner of a small ceramics factory in Kwidzyn. In 1966, he graduated as an external student from High School in Olsztyn, studying at the same time (since 1965) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Wroclaw. He continued his studies at the University of Warsaw in 1969 with a master’s degree in philosophy and In 1967 he became a member of the ZLP.

Chorążuk made his debut in 1962 in Tygodnik Morskie and in a Polskie Radio (PR) radio station in Gdańsk. His first volume of poetry was published in 1965. Chorążuk soon began writing poetry books, theater plays, children’s stories, and the lyrics of many songs (since 1971), some of which became hits, such as “Watchmaker/Clockmaster of the Light”, which was sung by the popular Polish musician Tadeusz Woźniak. Chorążuk also started his painting career in the 1970s, his paintings now exhibited in galleries across Poland and even abroad.

From 1972 onward, he cooperated with the monthly Poezja, becoming the director and artistic director of the State Enterprise of Artistic Events in Rzeszów in 1974. He also served as secretary of the Rzeszów Branch of the Polish People’s Party. Since 1990, Chorążuk runs his own publishing house ‘Wadium’, located in Warsaw.

Chorążuk is also a participant of the international Polish charity “Polish Artists – Children”, the proceeds of which are intended for the construction of the European Center of Children’s Friendship in Świdnica.
