About “The End of an Era”

The End of an Era is the official third studio album by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea released on August 13, 2021 independently via Bad Dreams Records.

Iggy first announced the project on December 9, 2019 a week after she released her four-track EP Wicked Lips.

After taking a break from social media to focus on her pregnancy and birth of her son Iggy got back in the studio at the end of May 2020 to finish the album. Describing it’s sound she hinted at a more experimental 90’s Pop mixed with Rap. She confirmed the album’s title on August 20, 2020 on Twitter, explaining that it’s an allusion to her life lessons and experiences in her early 20’s that come to an end as she grows up.

She revealed the release date on August 2, 2021, and it became available to pre-order the same week.

Executive produced by AJRuinedMyRecord, Bobby Sessions and JAY SCALEZ the project includes contributions from The 87’s, J. White Did It and OG Parker amongst others. Thematically it is expected to contain several references to previous pivotal moments in her career both lyrically and sonically. Cohesively divided into four parts with each one representing a span of her discography years. The standard version of the album includes fourteen songs whilst the Deluxe Version seventeen. On July 15, 2021 she confirmed that the project is her final studio album before a music hiatus to persue other things she loves, potentially expanding her perfume line, and other creative ventures.

Sip It the official lead single replacing “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” was released on April 2, 2021. The album’s second official single “I Am The Stripclub” was released on July 2, 2021. “Peach Body” was intended to serve as the album’s third and final single released along with a music video but ultimately got scrapped.

  • What has Iggy said about the sound of this album?

    In a series of tweets on July 29, 2020 Iggy Azalea talked about the overall sound of the project describing it as a summery-Miami-yacht type of music. She said that instrumental wise the beats are similar to the ones during her come up, more electronic and 80’s infused. Sonically moving further from the heavy cohesiveness of In My Defense.

  • What is the inspiration and influences for the album?

    When quizzed on the album’s inspirations Iggy revealed that the songs are thematically representative of four different periods in her career spanning from the age of twenty and twenty four to twenty eight and finally thirty. Songs on each section will cohesively and sonically pay homage to her music career and life at the time.

    Talking to Yahoo in June 2021, Iggy explained;

    The first portion of my album is more heavily electronic and experimental sounding and kind of reflects my mixtape days,” […] “The 24th section of the album is more sonically mainstream and pop-influenced. 28 is a much more urban, drum heavy sound, and then when it’s the final section of the album, which is 30, those final songs really represent where I am currently, as of right now.”

    The photoshoot took place at the pool of the Millennium Biltmore hotel, in Downtown Los Angeles. The iconic hotel has hosted the Oscars and served as a movie set for many blockbuster films and music videos such as Ghostbusters (1984), Pretty Woman (1990), A Star Is Born (2018) amongst others.
