ILoveMakonnen Reacts to Genius Annotations

DEK TK

On November 20th, ILoveMakonnen dropped his latest EP, _ I Love Makonnen 2_. ILoveMakonnen stopped by the Genius offices to annotate some of his hottest new tracks, like “ Trust Me Danny” and “ Forever” among others. He also read and reacted to Genius scholars’ annotations on his most famous verses, including on “ Tuesday” and Father’s “ Look At Wrist.

In response to an annotation linking his line “ Got your girl in the cut and she choosey” to a location in Atlanta’s North Druid Hills neighborhood, Makonnen noted “I’ve never heard of that place.” He clarified that the line refers not to a physical place, but to “ when someone’s in the club, with who they came with—but at the same time sneaky, looking at you. Not all out in the open. In the cut.

Makonnen loved reading the Genius community’s scholarship on “ Tuesday.” He cosigned five of his favorite annotations, including @ Babuc’s breakdown of his verse’s opening words—“ Workin’ Monday night, on the corner flippin’ hard”—and @ TruSwag’s annotation on the song’s epic hook, “ Got the club going up, on a Tuesday.”

Makonnen also dropped some knowledge of his own. In an annotation on one line, “ And it ain’t no way no, how I made it on my own,” he name-checks fellow Atlanta natives  Key! and Father. Then, a few minutes later, Makonnen joined Father on a verified annotation explaining how the two collaborated to turn the phrase “look at God” into the hit song “ Look At Wrist.” Makonnen added that “ Key!’s verse should have been banned” because of “All that vulgar shit.” But he clarified: “My mom loves Key! He’s so good.”
