Mockingbird Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Pretty wings, you're the prettiest thing
You're like Parker Posey in a magazine
With faded jeans and a crop top back in ninety-three
I wanna be your dressed in black
Your dark star with the backwards hat
I'm gonna write a book and put your name on every page
Every page

[Chorus]
Hey, pretty little mockingbird
Keep singing them sad, sad songs
There's already rain on my window
I'm dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
Now I'm underneath the willows hanging
I'm too strung out to be upside down
Pretty little mockingbird, sing your song

[Verse 2]
I was a desert, honey, you were the sand
I was a bird, baby, you were the branch
And I flew into the blue and watched those flowers die
It wasn't much, just everything
You could've sat right there and got high with me
But you fell asleep and your dreamin' brought the nightmares
Brought the nightmares
[Chorus]
Hey, pretty little mockingbird
Keep singing them sad, sad songs
There's already rain on my window
I'm dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
Now I'm underneath the willows hanging
I'm too strung out to be upside down
Pretty little mockingbird, sing your song

[Chorus]
Hey, pretty little mockingbird
Keep singing them sad, sad songs
There's already rain on my window
I'm dying when the morning comes
Flew away in the night with a raven
Now I'm underneath the willows hanging
I'm too strung out to be upside down

[Outro]
Pretty little mockingbird
Pretty little mockingbird, sing your song

Genius Annotation

According to the press release from Ruston Kelly in the music video description:

I wrote ‘Mockingbird’ in a Dominican hotel, on the edge of a bed, at like six in the morning. I needed a release from a cyclical pattern of a doomed relationship. The kind that leaves you with less than what you went in with. But, what directors Stephen Kinigopoulos and Alexa King reminded me with their proposed story about a single mother, is even though I write about my own personal situations, it’s also everyone’s story: the human condition, our connected plight in a mad world. Regardless of how it’s expressed, we all struggle through something with hope on the other side. That’s this song and that’s this video. That’s also why I fell in love working with them immediately.
