“On the for realer, my nigga, just call me Scarface” —Scarface, Geto Boys

Houston rap legend and Geto Boys founding member Scarface is widely seen as one of gangsta rap’s most important pioneers. But in recent annotations made to his lyrics on Genius, Scarface made it clear that he would like a bit more recognition.

“I know a lot of people won’t give me credit for having some big MC moments,” Scarface annotated, “but that was an MC moment.” He’s referring to a song from his 2007 album Made, but his annotations cover his whole career, from the origins of his name to his influence on fellow rappers.

Scarface also shouts out a couple recent tracks he’s been feeling ( some you might expect, and one you definitely won’t), but generally he sees hip-hop in a poor state. “Everybody now just monotones,” he annotates. “You should be able to use your voice as an instrument.”
